Columbus Public Health Offers Fourth of July Health Tips
As Central Ohio residents get ready to enjoy the best of Red, White & Boom and all the Fourth of July celebrations, Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Teresa Long reminds us of some helpful tips to enjoy a healthy and safe holiday.
Practice Food Safety
- Use a meat thermometer to make sure all meat and poultry are properly cooked – ground beef hamburgers to 160°F and hot dogs to 165°F.
- Use a clean plate and utensils when taking food off the grill.
- Keep hot food hot (140°F or above), and cold food cold (40°F or below).
- Refrigerate leftovers within two hours.
The symptoms of most types of food poisoning include severe cramps, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Symptoms can begin from 30 minutes to three or more days after eating contaminated food. If symptoms are severe or last longer than two days, contact a doctor or health care provider.
Reduce the risk for West Nile Virus by Preventing Mosquito Bites
- Wearing insect repellant with DEET.
- Eliminating standing water (bird baths, gutters, treating rain barrels, etc.).
- Staying indoors or wearing long sleeves and pants during early morning and late evening hours.
Maximize Sun Protection
- Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes before going outside.
- Increase your fluids - drink more liquid than your thirst indicates; avoid alcohol and caffeine.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loosing-fitting clothing.
Illnesses brought on by high temperatures include heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms of a heat related illness include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, headache, absence of perspiration and dry, hot flushed skin. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
Keep Your Pets Safe From Fireworks
Get Home Safe
- Designate a non-drinking driver when with a group.
- Don’t let your friends drive impaired. Take their keys away.
- If you have been drinking, get a ride home or call a taxi.
- If you’re hosting a party where alcohol will be served, also offer alcohol-free beverages; and make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.
