What is PEP?
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is an emergency medication that is taken after possible exposure to HIV. PEP must be started within 72 hours after HIV exposure to be effective.
PEP is different from PrEP, which is a medicine that is taken before possible exposure to HIV to prevent infection.
When is PEP recommended?
PEP should be taken immediately within 72 hours of being exposed to HIV, when you or someone you know has:
- Had unprotected vaginal/anal sex with someone who is HIV positive.
- Used non-sterile injection equipment.
How can I get PEP?
If you need PEP in Ohio, you should go to an emergency room immediately. A doctor will assess your risk before prescribing PEP. AHF Healthcare Center and Equitas Health Medical Center can also provide PEP in Columbus.
