HIV Testing

When it comes to HIV, knowing your status is an important first step to making sure you’re taking care of your sexual health. Luckily, HIV testing today is usually quick, discreet and often free—so you can learn your status and determine if you should get connected to HIV care, or if you should continue taking steps to prevent HIV

Who should get tested for HIV?

Getting tested regularly for HIV and STIs should be a normal and healthy part of everyone’s sex life. However, people who are a part of groups that are disproportionately affected by HIV should get tested more often. You may be at risk of HIV if you:

- Are a trans woman engaging in unprotected sex
- Are a man who has sex with men
- Have had sex (anal or vaginal) with someone who is HIV-positive
- Injected drugs (including steroids, hormones or silicone) and shared equipment or works
- Exchanged sex for drugs or money
- Been diagnosed with syphilis in the last 12 months
- Have a sexual partner who engages in the above risk behaviors

Get Tested at Columbus Public Health

At Columbus Public Health, we offer 4th-generation HIV screening (which detects the virus sooner after infection) in multiple clinics:

Take Care Down There Clinic: All patients are screened for STI and HIV risk. An HIV test will be performed if the individual is at a higher risk for HIV. The test is free and results will be available in about 30 minutes.

Sexual Health Clinic: STI and HIV testing provided, including anonymous and confidential HIV testing (a picture ID is required for confidential testing to provide copy of test results). Clinic can refer ongoing care, if needed. Most insurance cards accepted, and a sliding fee scale is offered for self-pay patients (cash, check, Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards accepted). No one is denied services based on inability to pay.

Women’s Health Clinic: STI and HIV risk factors assessed, with testing and exams available. Results available same-day or next day. Fees on a sliding fee scale based on household size and income; insurance also accepted. Referral to care, PrEP and other resources available. No one is denied services based on inability to pay.
