3rd Avenue between Edgehill Road and fire station

The city of Columbus is continuing its initiative to improve the public infrastructure on West 3rd Avenue between Olentangy River Road and Edgehill Road. The project will facilitate traffic flow, improve safety and provide pedestrian and bicyclist accommodations. Construction on the final phase began Dec. 5, 2016, and is scheduled to end July 2019, subject to weather conditions.

Ongoing Work as of April 16, 2018:
Contractor continues constructing the temporary railroad structure on 3rd Avenue, which is expected to be completed in July 2018, subject to weather conditions. Once train traffic has been shifted to the temporary railroad structure, the contractor will begin constructing the permanent railroad structure.    During construction of the temporary and permanent railroad structures, eastbound Third Avenue will be detoured for the entire duration of bridge construction.  In addition, westbound Third Avenue will be detoured from April 23rd thru May 14th for bridge foundation work.  Follow the links below for additional detour information:

Westbound Third Avenue Detour information (April 23rd thru May 14th)

Primary Detour: Westbound traffic shall be detoured at Olentangy River Road North to W. Fifth Avenue, then west to Northwest Boulevard, and finally south back to W. Third Avenue,  OR Olentangy River Road South to Goodale Boulevard, then West to Northwest Boulevard, and finally north back to W. Third Avenue.

Secondary Detour: Westbound traffic shall be detoured at Olentangy River Road North to W. 5th Avenue, then West to Edgehill Road, and finally south back to W. Third Avenue, OR  Olentangy River Road South to Goodale Boulevard, then west to Bobcat Avenue, and finally north back to W. Third Avenue.

All bridge work is expected to finish in February 2019.   Road and sidewalk work will start once the bridgework is complete. 

Improvements include:

3rd Avenue, approximately 375 feet west and 400 feet east of the CSX railroad bridge

Widen and reconstruct roadway
Construct a new two-span railroad bridge
Build curbs, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps (ADA), sidewalks and shared-use path
Upgrade street lights, signs and underground cables for traffic signals
Plant street trees and landscaping

Rail Street between 3rd Avenue and 300 feet south of 3rd Avenue
Construct new roadway
Build curbs, ADA curb ramps and sidewalks
Upgrade street lights and signs

Edgehill Road & 3rd Avenue intersection
Install new traffic signal
Build sidewalk, ADA curb ramps and bike path connections to Bobcat Avenue

Edgehill Road & 5th Avenue intersection
Install new traffic signal
Build curbs, ADA curb ramps and sidewalks

Estimated schedule:
Construction: Start November 2016 and finish July 2019, subject to weather conditions
