City of Columbus Firefighters Memorial - Erected in 1958, the eternal flame atop Greek columns honors firefighters who died in the line of duty.

Freedom - This sculpture was a gift to the City of Columbus from renowned artist Alfred Tibor in 1985.  A Holocaust survivor and Columbus resident, Tibor created the sculpture in appreciation of the freedoms and opportunities afforded him after immigrating to the United States in 1957.

James W. Barney Pickaweekee Story Grove - Amid the trees, whimsical bronze statues by internationally-renowned sculptor Jack Greaves illustrate the story of Pickaweekee, a Native American boy from a Scioto Valley tribe who embarks on a mythical journey of discovery.  Donor plaques line the sidewalk along the grove.

Columbus, OH 43215
View on Map

Park Hours:
7 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Situated in downtown Discovery District, the Topiary Garden Park sits on the remnants of the Old Deaf School Park.  Though it has become affectionately known as the Topiary Garden Park, the park land actually dates back to the early 19th century, when it was a dormitory and campus for the adjacent Deaf School.  Today, the Topiary Garden in Old Deaf School Park is the only public park of its kind, not only in Ohio, but in the world as well. The garden is a living recreation of Georges Seurat's famous post-Impressionist painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of LaGrande Jatte.

The idea for the topiary garden was conceived and sculpted in 1989 by Columbus artist James T. Mason and his wife Elaine, also an artist.  The pond is meant to represent the River Seine was installed in late 1989, as were the artificial hills.  In the years since its creation, the Topiary Garden has appeared in a multitude of magazines, periodicals, books, and documentaries including Life, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, and programs aired on the BBC.

The Topiary Garden Park is open daily from dawn until dusk, and admission is free to all visitors.  April through November is the recommended time for viewing the garden, as the park is blooming in full. Don't forget to stop at the point of "As He Saw It," the marked location that represents how Seurat saw the scene as he was painting it.

Dorrian Green provides play areas for children and adults, amenities include a Sensory Garden, Reading Garden, Butterfly and Pollinator Garden, and Prairie Garden consisting of plants native to central Ohio. The Fountain Plaza is anchored by an interactive fountain and flanked by two open-air pavilions and flowering cherry tree groves. The northwest and southwest entrances feature salvaged limestone structures from the historic Central High School Stadium that once occupied the site, and the relocation of a kinetic sculpture titled "The Spectrum Tree", celebrates Isaac Newton's discovery that sunlight contains the entire spectrum of colors.

Dorrian Green is named in honor of Franklinton native Hugh J. Dorrian, a dedicated and unwavering public servant to the residents of Columbus for 52 years. Mr. Dorrian served as the city’s fiscal guardian from 1966 through 2017, first as Columbus City Treasurer and then as Columbus City Auditor. He had a strong hand in the revitalization of the Short North and other downtown neighborhoods, the Arena District, University District, Scioto Mile and Franklinton. Mr. Dorrian, a graduate of St. Charles High School, had a seat at the table for every major decision made on behalf of the residents of Columbus for more than half a century, ensuring that Columbus continued to thrive and grow into the vibrant city it is today. Parks have always been a bright memory for Mr. Dorrian, as he spent many years playing at Sunshine Park, which is now warmly known as Dodge Park. Dorrian Green is nestled on the grounds of the former Central High School, which served as a bedrock for community gatherings. Our hope is for Dorrian Green to serve as a wonderful mainstay for Columbus residents and visitors for generations. The dedication will highlight Mr. Dorrian’s commitment to building communities where everyone is welcome and has the opportunity to thrive.

The stylistic design of the park was meant to resemble that of a German "bier garten" with red brick and wrought-iron throughout the park. With a variety of blooming plant life, Frank Fetch Park is a great resource for gardeners and a beautiful site to relax.

Today, the park is maintained by the German Village Garten Club, who has helped make this park an enjoyable area to dine, read, walk or learn about the flora.

Located just east of downtown Columbus, Franklin Park is the place for year round fun in Central Ohio.  The 100 acre shared park is a popular destination for community events and provides a tranquil and beautiful site for a wedding ceremony.  The park is also home to the  Franklin Park Conservatory , which is a cherished gem of the city and is run by Joint Recreational District/Conservatory.  During the winter months visitors come to the park to view the snow-capped trees, and to warm up inside the lush environments of the conservatory.

Our Therapeutic Recreation Program is located in the Franklin Park Adventure Center.

History
In 1852, an eight acre county fairground - The Franklin County Agricultural Society Grounds, opened on what was to become Franklin Park.  Fairs were held here for 30 years as the grounds were expanded to 100 acres.  Urbanization of surrounding lands forced the County to abandon the land in 1884 and establish new fairgrounds at a more remote site.  The Ohio General Assembly passed a resolution in 1885 that permitted use of the land as a public park to be administered by the City of Columbus.

In 1894, the City of Columbus commissioned a local architect, J.M. Freese, to design a facility to be built in the park similar to a mammoth glass palace featured at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.  The Chicago "glass palace" was inspired by London's Crystal Palace built in 1850.  In 1895 the Franklin Park Conservatory was built (Nat. registry of Historic Places 1974).  The Conservatory housed zoo animals for many years until 1925 when the zoo changed its location to the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir.  Ameriflora, an international horticultural exhibition was held in the park in 1992 as part of the Columbus Quincentennial; the exhibition cost $95 million to produce and attracted 5.5 million visitors.  Some features from Ameriflora still remain in the park, including the lake with a fountain and waterfalls, floral gardens and a sculpture near the conservatory, walkways, and conservatory expansions.  After Ameriflora, a Joint Recreational Conservatory District formed - 27.96 acres within the park to contain the Conservatory and the surrounding gardens.  In 2009, a vast community garden area in the SE corner of the park opened that will allow food and gardening classes for all ages.

Park Hours:

Genoa Park is located on the western bank of the Scioto River between Rich Street and Broad Street. The park is named after the Italian city of Genoa – one of Columbus’ ten international sister cities and the birthplace of city’s namesake Christopher Columbus.

Park features include:

Riverfront Amphitheater - With stunning views of the downtown skyline, the amphitheater attracts thousands of visitors for concerts and events each year.

Genoa Park Lighting - This dynamic LED lighting feature is installed within the steps and seating area of the Riverfront Amphitheater and programmed to display a variety of multi-colored designs throughout the year.
Columbus Police Memorial | This monument bears the names of Columbus Police Officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the public.

Lucas Sullivant Statue - Erected in 2000, the statue was commissioned by the Franklinton Historical Society and created by local artist Michael Foley.  Lucas Sullivant was a surveyor and early American frontiersman who founded Franklinton in 1797.  Named in honor of Benjamin Franklin, Franklinton is Columbus’ oldest neighborhood and was the first settlement in the Scioto Valley north of Chillicothe.

Scioto Lounge Deer Sculptures - Genoa Park is home to two whimsical bronze sculptures of “humanized” deer (a third sculpture in this series is located on the Rich Street Bridge).  Country music singer and acclaimed visual artist Terry Allen came up with the concept after visiting the city and learning that the Scioto River takes its name from the Shawnee Indian word for “hairy water.”  According to local legend, when the Shawnee first migrated to Scioto River valley from the Carolinas, they found deer hair floating in the river.

Genoa Park Fountains - Located at the top of the Riverfront Amphitheater, the fountains are comprised of 24 bronze basins housed in 12 stone pedestals along Washington Boulevard.

Adjacent to Genoa Park and across the street from the Riverfront Amphitheater is the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) – a dynamic hands-on science museum and one of downtown Columbus’ most popular attractions.  During COSI’s 1999 move to the riverfront’s west side, the historic façade of the old Central High School (built in 1924) was preserved and incorporated into Arata Isozaki’s architectural design for the museum’s new facility.

History of Glenwood Park

  • The park was private property until 1911, when it was purchased by The Society for the Prevention and Cure of Tuberculosis  as a site for an "open air" school. Protests by the people of that section led to its purchase by the city, and thus its conversion into Glenwood Park the following year. (History of City of Columbus by Osman C. Hooper, 1921)
  • On May 11, 1914 the ordinance 28024 was set in place to provide for issuance of bonds to pay for the expense associated with the erection of the new recreation center building. Within that same calendar year, (December 1, 1914 and April 1, 1915) both $15,000 and $10,000 park bonds were issued.
  • On July 14, 1914  the cornerstone laying ceremony took place at the new $25,000 Glenwood Park recreation center and shelterhouse.
  • On December 14, 1916 the Glenwood Park recreation center and shelterhouse was officially opened and dedicated to the public.
  • Some years later, 1972 to be specific, the community pool was put in place.
  • On July 4, 1992 the M.E. "Jack" Sensenbrenner landmark sculpture was unveiled. This sculpture was erected to honor the former Mayor of Columbus. It was erected in the park by Greater Hilltop Community Development Corporation  and The Hilltop '92 Celebration Commission . The statue proudly stands on a hill that faces downtown Columbus.

Goodale Park is surrounded by Victorian Village, a cluster of homes with charming architectural features. It is the oldest park in Columbus and among the oldest in the United States.

Although Goodale Park contains an expansive playground and tennis courts, the park's main attraction is its view of the Columbus skyline and the serenity offered alongside a scenic pond and the charm of the gazebo and of its historic park shelter. A walk through Goodale Park is a refreshing experience.

The Friends of Goodale Park, a volunteer group that works to improve the park conducted a tree inventory of the park. The park boasts a very impressive tree collection, in terms of numbers, 650+ trees, and species represented, 169, not including various cultivars. The inventory took more than 2 years to complete, but was well worth the effort and the Friends are happy to share the knowledge of the jewels of the park with others.

History
Dr. Lincoln Goodale, prominent and charitable pioneer, and the community's first physician in his later years. He died May 1, 1868. He donated the 40 acre site July 14, 1851 to be forever kept as a public park or pleasure resort for the inhabitants of City. If appropriated for any other use or purpose, park is to revert to heirs of Lincoln Goodale.. A bronze bust of Dr. Goodale was placed in the park in 1888. It was sculpted by J.G.A. Ward. Dr. Lincoln Goodale Monument is listed on National Register of Historic Places.

The Hoover Reservoir Park (area) offers over 4,700 acres of peaceful and serene landscape just North of Columbus. The park and lake provide guests with a range of recreational activities from picnicking, hiking, boating and fishing. For the bird watching enthusiasts, the park offers a wide variety of bird types ranging from common to rare. This includes frequent sightings of the American Bald Eagle throughout the year. The reservoir is an important feature for tourism, but also for the water it provides to the city of Columbus.

3/23/2022 The 1,500-foot boardwalk at Hoover Reservoir near Galena has been inspected by professional engineers, and it was determined that the boardwalk is not safe for individuals to use. Because it's not safe to use, the boardwalk will be closed until it has been redesigned and rebuilt.

Next steps include conducting an environmental assessment of the area and doing public outreach with the community to learn what residents would like to see with the redesign of this boardwalk. Investing in this new boardwalk will create a more sustainable and accessible amenity for the local community. The new boardwalk will most likely be completed and open to the public in 2024.

Schiller Park is the second oldest park in the City of Columbus, runner up to only Goodale Park, established in 1857. Schiller Park was obtained in April 1867 for $15,000. Originally called Stewart's Grove by the early settlers, the city bought these 23.5 acres in 1867 and Stewart's Grove became City Park. In 1891, it was renamed Schiller park after the famous German poet, Friedrich von Schiller. An impressive statue of Schiller decorates the center of the park.

During World War I, American sentiment turned against all things German and Schiller Park was renamed Washington Park. Several of the German Street names in the area also were changed. After the war, the park's name was changed back to Schiller, although most of the streets did not revert to their pre-war names (German Village Society, 1992).

The park is now a well-kept central location of German Village life. The community center, picnic areas, softball diamonds, fishing pond and stage for the Actor's Summer Theater, not to mention the beautifully landscaped gardens, make Schiller Park the jewel of German Village.

Champion Trees

Champion Trees is a program of American Forests that identifies and promotes the oldest and largest trees of each species in the country and each state. These trees have survived for decades or even centuries through the harshest of times and deserve recognition for their strength and endurance. Their existence helps promote the many benefits that all trees provide for our community and neighborhoods.

In October 2020, Columbus Recreation and Parks Department acquired 11 acres of the former Stockbridge School on South Champion Avenue, next to Stockbridge Park, in the Far South neighborhood. This addition, purchased from Columbus City Schools, means the entire park is now 22 acres!

Columbus Recreation and Parks Department was awarded a Clean Ohio Conservation grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission to acquire the site and plant thousands of native trees on the site of the former school. In coordination with the Far South community, the department designed a sustainable, resilient forest that residents can access via a paved walking loop and mowed paths. Reforesting Stockbridge Park provides critical tree canopy to one of the city’s highest need communities.

To create this forest, in 2021, the old Stockbridge Elementary School building was demolished and the surrounding 2 acres of pavement were removed. In 2022, the department planted native wildflowers and grasses across the park, along with approximately 2,400 native trees. Most trees are planted in “pods” that are composed of a naturalized mix of different species, with grass walking paths between them. Individual trees have also been planted at the entrances on Lockbourne and South Champions, as well as to provide shade to park users around the playground, the open-air shelter, the parking lots and the paved walking loop.

Columbus, OH 43215

Park Hours:

The Topiary Garden is a living recreation of Georges Seurat's famous post-Impressionist painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of LaGrande Jatte.

Whetstone Park, located just north of The Ohio State University, is a community park and landmark for the Clintonville neighborhood that encompasses over 136 acres for both active and passive use. Originally a family farm in the early 1800's, the land was purchase by Columbus mayor James A. Rhodes in 1944 and converted into a park for Victory Gardens during World War II.  Over 500 Victory Gardens were planted throughout the duration of the war, and on Memorial Day 1950, the land was christened Whetstone Park. Today, Whetstone Park is a community park that combines natural beauty, native Ohio prairie, and community amenities. The park has a large community center that provides classes from tots to seniors, meeting rooms and free space. The park has youth and adult sports leagues, fishing, trails, playgrounds and natural areas. The Park of Roses is a park within the park, a 13 acre rose garden that showcases over 350 varieties of roses, and 11,000 total roses.  A recent addition, the Whetstone Prairie, planted in May 2004, converted 5.1 acres of Whetstone Park into native Ohio prairie with vernal pools and woodland buffer.  This site is used as a key educational and demonstration site that includes walking trails, viewing stations, information signage and an educational program.
