Mayor Michael B. Coleman and Council President Andrew J. Ginther created the Columbus Education Commission to examine the challenges and opportunities facing all the Children in the Columbus City School District. The Commission developed a report that utilized research and community input that guide the direction of the Education department. The Education Commission’s final report to the community is the foundation for all of the Departments work.

The Columbus Education Commission was designed to address Mayor Michael B. Coleman and City Council President Andrew J. Ginther’s “charge.” The “charge” to the Commission was: enable all of our children to succeed in the city’s vibrant, growing economy; make Columbus a global leader in developing the highly-skilled, creative, entrepreneurial workforce that will propel economic growth in the 21st century; and leverage the resourcefulness of our entire community to meet these goals, in the Columbus City School district.  The Commission presented four main recommendations for improving Columbus Education. Those recommendations are: decision-making should be decentralized, an increased focus on preschool education, updated technology in school buildings, and recruiting and maintaining high-quality teachers. The published report findings of the Commission’s report help guide the Department of Education towards initiatives that encourage growth and development in the school district.
