If your property has one or more backflow prevention assemblies, you must hire a certified tester approved by the City of Columbus to perform annual tests and complete any repairs that might be needed. 

In addition to any fees that may be incurred from the actual test of the device itself from an outside backflow testing company, there is an annual fee of $25.00 per device (effective July 1, 2011 per City Code 1105.09-items N and P) to offset the administrative costs involved with maintaining the device with the City's records and to keep in compliance with EPA regulations.

These lists are typically updated monthly.

Non-residential customers are required to install a backflow preventer at the end of their water service line(s). Booster pumps, which could create backflow in adjacent properties, must be equipped with a method of preventing low pressure on the suction line to the pump. See Guidance for Non-residential Properties for specific requirements, types of devices, standard detail drawings and exceptions.

If you have received a letter of violation for required backflow prevention measures from the Division of water you must install the required backflow protection. Your site-specific requirements can be found on our customer portal.

Those using large amounts of water not entering the sewer system (outdoor watering, irrigation systems) could save by installing an auxiliary meter system. The system must be purchased, installed and maintain privately.
