Chief’s Advisory Panel
About Us
The Chief’s Advisory Panel serves as a liaison between the Columbus Division of Police and the community. Composed of faith leaders, students, residents, community advocates, and local stakeholders, the panel provides insight regarding the inner workings of the city and amplifies the voices of Columbus residents, bringing feedback and concerns directly to the Division. They are champions for change, leveraging their expertise in varying sectors to build bridges and push for transparency. The panel supports Chief Elaine R. Bryant and the Division to foster collaborative relationships built on trust, transparency, and consistency.
Discussions about creating a panel began in 2020 during a time of social unrest and increasing tensions between the Columbus police and both residents and visitors who participated in that year's protests. Under the leadership of then-Police Chief Thomas Quinlan, the Chief’s Advisory Panel was established. Its founding members were assigned to study and provide guidance on several key issues, including policy, recruitment efforts, record-keeping, and the Division’s tactics for handling large gatherings and protests.
Today, the panel is just as committed to this partnership with CPD and to fostering greater understanding and more authentic interaction between the community and the men and women of the Columbus Division of Police. This panel is not just about accountability, it is about responsibility; the responsibility to serve the city of Columbus at every level, protect the peace of our community, and to lead by example, not just by thought.
The Chief’s Advisory Panel invites you to follow our journey and work alongside us as we move toward a brighter and more inclusive future together.

Community Engagement: We facilitate meaningful interactions between the police department and community members through various outreach programs and community events. By fostering dialogue and understanding, we aim to build trust and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community.
Policy Review and Recommendations: We review existing police policies and procedures to ensure they align with best practices and community needs. Through thorough analysis and discussion, we provide recommendations to the police chief on potential improvements or updates to policies aimed at enhancing accountability, transparency, and effectiveness.
Addressing Community Concerns: We serve as a bridge between the community and the police department, addressing concerns and grievances raised by community members in a constructive and collaborative manner. By providing a platform for dialogue and problem-solving, we work towards finding solutions that benefit both the community and law enforcement.
Training and Education: We advocate for ongoing training and education for law enforcement officers to enhance their skills, cultural competency, and understanding of community issues. By promoting continuous learning and professional development, we strive to ensure that officers are well-equipped to serve diverse communities effectively and with sensitivity.
Promoting Accountability and Transparency: We advocate for accountability and transparency within the police department, encouraging open communication and accountability mechanisms that build public trust and confidence in law enforcement.
Advising on Community Policing Strategies: We provide input and guidance to the police chief on community policing strategies tailored to the unique needs and challenges of our local communities. By leveraging community input and expertise, we aim to develop proactive approaches to crime prevention and public safety that prioritize community well-being.
Through these initiatives and more, the Chief's Advisory Panel is committed to fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the community, promoting fairness, justice, and mutual respect for all.
