The first step in the selection process is to file an application. If your application is approved, the Civil Service Commission will notify you of the time and place to report for the four phase entry level police officer examination.
The phases of the examination are:
- Phase I – Multiple Choice - this portion of the exam covers spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension and map reading.
- Phase II – Writing Sample - this portion of the exam is designed to test your oral comprehension and writing skills, as well as your knowledge of correct language usage such as spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization.
- Phase III – Columbus Oral Police Exam (COPE) - this portion of the exam is video based and is designed to assess a candidate’s problem solving skills and interpersonal relations skills.
- Phase IV – Entry Level Physical Fitness Test - this portion of the exam determines your physical readiness to perform the job of a police officer. It consists of a 300 meter run, 1 minute sit-up test and a maximum push-up test. Performance is based on age and gender.
Physical Test Standards
300 Meter Run—number of seconds not to exceed to pass
Sit-ups—number of repetitions needed within one minute to pass
Push-ups—number of consecutive repetitions needed to pass
Phases I, II, and IV are administered on a pass / fail basis only. Candidates who pass all four phases of the exam will be placed into one of three bands (90, 80, or 70 band) on the eligible list based on their Phase III scores and approved Veteran’s Preference Credit (see Military Accommodations).
Information sessions will be offered by Civil Service prior to testing, and we strongly urge you to attend one of these sessions.
Note: Application-filing periods are announced by the City of Columbus Civil Service Commission on as as-needed basis.
