WHAT:

Councilmember Mitchell J. Brown, chair of the Public Safety Committee will conduct a hearing to discuss proposed gun possession, storage and sale legislation within the City. The package was developed as a proactive measure to address violence.

“This past year, Columbus experienced a record number of firearm-related injuries and deaths,” said Councilmember Brown. “It's time for the City of Columbus to take legislative steps toward reducing the impact of gun-related violence in our neighborhoods.”

The focus of the legislation will be to:

  • Prohibit the possession, sale, and transfer of high capacity magazines
  • Require the safe storage of a firearm in a residence where a minor is present
  • Prohibit the unlawful sale of a firearm to a person who makes the purchase with the intention of providing the firearm to a person who is ineligible to legally possess a firearm (commonly referred to as a “straw” sale)

Any resident seeking to submit written testimony should submit their testimony to the office of Councilmember Brown. Written testimony must be received by 2pm on the day of the hearing and should be emailed to Grant Ames at [email protected].

Any resident wishing to appear via WebEx to provide testimony during the virtual hearing should email Grant Ames at [email protected] by noon on the day of the hearing to request a WebEx speaker link. Each speaker will be limited to remarks lasting no longer than three minutes.

The hearing will be live-streamed on the City’s YouTube channel and Facebook.
