Largest-Ever Resurfacing Investment and Bikeways, Sidewalks
and Alley Improvements Highlight Proposed 2012 Capital Budget
Neighborhood leaders today joined Mayor Michael B. Coleman and City Council Members to announce the proposed 2012 city of Columbus Capital Improvements Budget. The plan includes $31 million for resurfacing 156 streets and dozens of alleys, the largest single-year investment in resurfacing and alleys in the city’s history.
“These improvements are the foundation for stronger neighborhoods in Columbus,” said Mayor Coleman. “We are investing in street resurfacing, sidewalks, bikeways and alleys that will improve safety and the quality of life for people across Columbus.”
Within the $31 million for resurfacing in 2012, $1.5 million will cover surface treatments for alleys. Alley surface treatments smooth the alley surface, fill potholes and apply a mix of crushed stone and a tar-like liquid emulsion. The proposed capital improvements budget also includes $6 million for new sidewalks and nearly $6.4 million for bikeways, bike paths and bike pavement markings.
“The capital budget allows Columbus to not only invest in building better neighborhoods, but also create jobs and generate additional revenue to sustain the long term growth of our city,” said Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, chair of the Finance Committee.
Other Capital Improvements Investments include:
- $2 million for neighborhood safety cameras
- $2 million for vacant housing demolition and $1.8 million for housing preservation
- $3.8 million for recreation and parks facilities renovation
- $1.7 million for pools and spraygrounds

City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed 2012 Capital Improvements Budget on April 16. City Council is holding a series of public hearings on the proposed 2012 Capital Improvements Budget. The first will feature an Administration overview of the Budget at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in City Council Chambers. City Council will hold to additional meetings to discuss the proposed Capital Budget March 29 and April 12, both at 5:30 p.m.
