Bike Lanes Added On Linworth Road And To Be Installed On Kelton Avenue In August
The City
of Columbus is adding to its growing miles of bikeways with the installation of
bike lanes on Linworth Road and Kelton Avenue this month.
“This is
another step in building the network of bike lanes, bike routes and bike
sharrows to make Columbus streets safer for bicyclists,” said Mayor Michael B.
Coleman. “We want to make Columbus one of the top cities in the nation to
ride bikes for recreation, fitness and commuting to and from work and shops and
restaurants.”
The addition of bike lanes
on both sides of Linworth Road between Linworth Road East and Hard Road will be
completed today, Thursday, August 13. In addition, Bike Route signs will
be installed on the following streets:
- Rutherglen Drive, between Sefton Park Drive
and Southview Drive
- Sefton Park Drive, between Hard Road and
Rutherglen Drive
- Southview Drive, between Clubview Boulevard
South and Rutherglen Drive
“These new bike lanes are a fantastic addition to the
City’s existing inventory of bike lanes,” said Councilmember Shannon G. Hardin,
chair of City Council’s Public Service & Transportation Committee. “The new
lanes will also give bicyclists an added sense of safety, in addition to
providing more routes for getting to work, school or enjoying a leisurely
ride.”
The project is a
collaboration between the City of Columbus, the City of Worthington and the
Ohio Department of Transportation. The three streets are part of a recommended
alternate route for bicyclists to use on the Olentangy Greenways Trail while a
section of the trail is closed during construction of the Ohio Department of
Transportation’s I-270/S.R. 315 Interchange Project. The Olentangy
Greenways Trail between Worthington Hills and Olentangy River Parklands at
Wilson Bridge Road will be closed during the construction. That section
of the trail will be closed starting on August 10, 2015, and is scheduled to
reopen in the fall of 2016, weather permitting.
The Linworth Road bike
lanes and the Bike Route signs on Rutherglen Drive, Sefton Park Drive and
Southview Drive will be permanent and will remain in place after ODOT completes
construction of the I-270/S.R. 315 Interchange Project.
A new
bike lane will be added to Kelton Avenue between East Main Street and Franklin
Park South on August 18 – 19, 2015, weather permitting. The bike lane
will be added along the east side of Kelton Avenue between on-street parking
spaces and the vehicle travel lane. Kelton Avenue between East Main
Street and Franklin Park south will be reconfigured from its current two travel
lanes to one travel lane. No parking spaces will be removed. The
addition of the bike lane and change to a single travel lane will increase
safety for bicyclists and help calm vehicle traffic.
