City of Columbus Begins Infrastructure Work on Sullivant Avenue
The City of Columbus began work this week on $10 million in
infrastructure improvements along the Sullivant Avenue corridor that includes
roadway repairs, pedestrian safety enhancements, new traffic signals and street
lighting.
The neighborhood investment follows a commitment Mayor
Andrew J. Ginther made in his State of the City address in February to the
residents and businesses along this corridor. The upgrades will be made on
nearly two miles of Sullivant Avenue between Hague Avenue and I-70.
“This is more than revitalizing the streets and sidewalks
and other infrastructure,” said Mayor Ginther. “It is about revitalizing lives,
and supporting and empowering our neighborhoods. Residents and businesses along
the Sullivant Avenue corridor will be seeing exciting infrastructure
improvements in progress during this construction season.
”The Department of Public Service is leading this
neighborhood project, with $2 million of the infrastructure improvements being
completed or managed by its divisions of Infrastructure Management and Traffic
Management.
“The Sullivant Avenue corridor will be revitalized with
improved streets, sidewalks, street lighting and other infrastructure fixes,”
said Director Jennifer L. Gallagher. “The department is excited to be a part of
this project and to complete many of these neighborhood improvements with our
in-house teams.”
Infrastructure Management Division has assessed sidewalk,
panel by panel, for cracks, deterioration or unevenness. As a result, 500 to
1,000 sidewalk panels and multiple driveways will be replaced. Approximately
170 panels are being repaired to eliminate trip hazards and make the sidewalks
easier to access for everyone.
The Sullivant Avenue streetscape improvement plan also
includes $7 million in design and construction funding to replace traffic
signals with span wire; build permanent pedestrian safety improvements
including bump-outs, refuge islands and crosswalks at up to 12 intersections; replace
all existing street lights along Sullivant and side streets with LED cobra head
luminaires; and add artistic lighting at the I-70 bridge underpass.
Public Service teams will perform and manage project work
including sidewalk replacement, ponding mitigation, maintenance crack sealing,
alley rehabilitation and landscaping. They will also replace all stop signs and
other damaged or faded signs and upgrade pavement markings where they are faded
or missing.
