CDBG Resources

What is it?

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) is federal funding provided to the City of Columbus by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to develop viable urban communities with an emphasis on supporting low- and moderate-income persons. CDBG can be used for projects like affordable housing development, public facilities and services, property rehabilitation, and more.

2024 City of Columbus CDBG Grant Timeline

Every year, the City administers CDBG funds to internal and external organizations through a competitive application process. Below is our timeline of the grant process:

March 31, 2023 – Pre-Application released to the public. Recommended submission: April 28th 

April 11, 2023, 2:30 – 3:30 PM – CDBG Pre-Application Workshop @ 141 N Front Street parking garage conference room. This is the first opportunity to get initial feedback from Grants Management staff and learn more about the CDBG program.

May 15, 2023 – 2024 CDBG Application released to the public (available at https://www.columbus.gov/finance/financial-management-group/Grants-Management/)

May 23, 2023, 3:00 – 4:00 PM – 2024 CDBG Informational Session @ Auditorium in Columbus Metropolitan Library Main Branch (96 S Grant Ave). This meeting will provide an overview of the CDBG program, requirements of the 2024 CDBG application, and provide technical assistance.

July 14, 2023, 5:00 PM – 2024 CDBG Application due on Bonfire (City’s application portal)

July 14 – August 2023 – CDBG project review and scoring by internal committee

August 2023 – October 2023 – Public participation process and selection of 2024 CDBG awards: Public meeting will be held to present all applications received for CDBG funding, seek feedback on funding priorities, and allow for public comment. Columbus City Council Finance Committee Hearing will be held following selection of CDBG awards to review draft 2024 Annual Action Plan. This hearing provides an opportunity for public comment.

October – December, 2023 – Columbus City Council passes legislation adopting draft 2024 Annual Action Plan. Grants Management staff works with CDBG awardees to complete environmental reviews, finalize project scopes, and sign agreements before program year begins January 1, 2024.
