What types of allegations does the DIG investigate?
Pursuant to Sec. 235 of the City Code, the Inspector General shall investigate complaints of misconduct and/or excessive use of force by sworn personnel in the Columbus Division of Police.
Does the DIG investigate police involved shootings by the Columbus Division of Police?
No, police involved shootings by the Columbus Division of Police are investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).
Does the DIG investigate criminal matters involving the Columbus Division of Police?
No, the DIG conducts administrative investigations only.
Is there a time limit on when complaints may be filed with the DIG?
Yes, in accordance with the 2020-2023 FOP CBA Sec. 8.12, a complaint must be received by the City in writing or reduced to writing within ninety (90) days after the date of the alleged event giving rise to the complaint.
