Ribbon Cutting Opens First of Three Columbus Public Health Farmers Markets
Event Kicks-off Signature Markets to Provide Local Fresh Produce on Near East Side

WHAT
Columbus Public Health will hold a brief ceremony and ribbon cutting to open its first farmers market of the season.  The event kicks-off a series of three signature markets to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables on Columbus’ Near East Side.

Dr. Teresa Long, health commissioner at Columbus Public Health; Priscilla Tyson, member of Columbus City Council; Phyllis Pirie associate dean of research and professor of health behavior and health promotion at The Ohio State University College of Public Health; community leaders; vendors; and, neighborhood residents

Columbus Public Health, 240 Parsons Ave.

DETAILS
A brief ribbon cutting ceremony will open the first of three signature farmers markets at Columbus Public Health.  Following the ceremony, area farmers will offer locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables to neighborhood residents and participants of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program and the Ohio Direction Card.

The markets support Columbus Public Health’s mission of protecting health and improving lives because many chronic health conditions – including diabetes, overweight and obesity – are related to poor nutrition. 

Thousands of community members are expected to attend the markets which are in their 9th year.  Subsequent markets will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Aug. 1 and Aug. 8 at Columbus Public Health.
